The town's history as the home of the British Army has left it with an unusual tree stock. Large parts of Aldershot were laid out as military estate in the nineteenth century, and the avenues, parade grounds and officers' housing were planted with limes, horse chestnuts and Scots pine that are now fully mature. Many of these are magnificent, and many are also now reaching a stage where they need skilled attention rather than neglect.
