Alton is roughly ten miles south-west of Farnham along the A31, and it is a genuinely different growing environment from the heathland towns to our north. Alton sits on chalk, and chalk changes everything about what grows well and how it behaves.

Beech does well on thin chalk soils but it is shallow-rooted, and that combination makes mature beech more vulnerable to windthrow than its size suggests. It is also unforgiving of heavy pruning; beech does not respond well to being cut hard, so reductions need to be modest and well-judged rather than drastic.

The town centre is a Conservation Area with a good deal of Georgian and Victorian building, and trees within it are protected accordingly. Yew is one of the few conifers that will regenerate from old wood, which makes it far more forgiving than leylandii and well worth restoring rather than replacing.

Out towards Holybourne, Beech and Chawton the plots open up considerably, and the work shifts towards orchard and fruit tree pruning, hedgerow management and dealing with ash dieback, which has affected this area badly.
