Basingstoke is about eighteen miles west of Farnham and is the largest town we cover. It presents a very particular arboricultural situation that is worth explaining, because it affects a great many households here.

Basingstoke expanded enormously from the 1960s onwards under the London overspill agreements, and the new estates built through that period were landscaped generously with young trees. Those trees were mostly planted within a couple of decades of one another, which means an entire town's worth of amenity planting is reaching maturity at roughly the same time. Across Chineham, Brighton Hill, Popley, Buckskin and South Ham we see the same story repeatedly: a cherry, whitebeam, maple or lime planted at three metres in 1972 that is now dominating a garden it was never intended to dominate.
