Yateley is about twelve miles north of Farnham, sitting on the Blackwater Valley at the northern edge of Hampshire. It is defined by its common - Yateley Common Country Park is one of the largest remaining areas of lowland heath in the county - and the heath sets the character of the trees in the town.

This is sandy, acidic, free-draining ground, and it grows Scots pine and silver birch better than almost anything else. Gardens backing onto the common are frequently dominated by self-seeded birch and pine that arrived on their own and were left to get on with it. Birch is short-lived by the standards of forest trees and tends to start dropping limbs and declining at fifty or sixty years, so a lot of our Yateley work is dealing with birch that has reached the end of its useful life.
