Guildford is about eleven miles east of Farnham and is the largest Surrey town we cover. It is also, from a tree surgery point of view, one of the more technically demanding places we work.

The town is built across the gap where the River Wey cuts through the North Downs, and a great many properties sit on genuinely steep ground. Streets running up towards The Mount, Pewley Down and Guildown are steep enough that access, rigging and getting material off site all need thinking through properly in advance. Dropping timber on a slope behaves very differently from dropping it on the flat, and this is where experience actually counts.

Guildford also has unusually dense Tree Preservation Order coverage. Between the Conservation Areas, the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty designation across much of the surrounding countryside, and a borough council that has historically protected trees vigorously, the working assumption in Guildford should be that a mature tree is protected until established otherwise. We check with Guildford Borough Council before quoting rather than after.

The chalk downland soil favours beech, yew and whitebeam, and the slopes above the town carry substantial stands of all three. Yew in particular is everywhere here, including some very old specimens, and much of our Guildford work involves sensitive reduction of established yew rather than anything dramatic.

Onslow Village and the leafier residential streets were laid out with generous planting that is now fully mature, and the work there mirrors what we see in Fleet - gardens gradually shaded out over decades, needing thinning and reduction to get the light back. Shalford, Artington and the villages towards the Wey are more rural, with riverside willow and alder that need regular pollarding to stay safe.
