Fleet is roughly eight miles north-west of Farnham and is one of our busiest areas outside the town itself. It is a prosperous commuter town with generous plot sizes, and that combination means a lot of large, well-established gardens with trees to match.

The older parts of Fleet - the roads running off Fleet Road, and the area around Fleet Pond - were developed when the land was still heath, and much of the original birch, oak and Scots pine was retained rather than cleared. The result is streets where mature trees sit close to houses, garages and boundaries. Fleet Pond is the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and properties backing onto the reserve or the surrounding heath need a slightly more careful approach. Elvetham Heath is a different proposition entirely. Built from the late nineties onwards, it was landscaped with a great deal of new planting, and those trees are now twenty to twenty-five years old - exactly the age at which formative work pays off. Getting a young tree properly shaped now prevents a much larger and more expensive problem in another two decades. We do a lot of this sort of preventative pruning on the estate.

Across Fleet generally, beech and hornbeam hedging is popular and well-suited to the soil, and we maintain a good number of them on annual or twice-yearly cycles.
